NORTHWEST TERRITORIES

The Northwest Territories are part of northern Canada.
The NWT lie between the Yukon Territory and Nunavut.
The Arctic Ocean is to the north.

This colourful flag represents Canada's North.
The blue in the flag stands for water.
The white is for the ice and snow.
The shield is in the centre of the flag.
It became the official flag of the N.W.T in 1969.

THE COAT OF ARMS

Above the shield are two gold narwhals and a "compass rose" which represents the magnetic North Pole.

The blue and white at the top of the shield are for the waters of the Northwest Passage flowing through the polar ice pack.

The rest of the shield is divided by a wavy diagonal line which represents the treeline.

The green lower half represents the southern forests and the upper red section represents the tundra (frozen land) to the north.

The gold bars are for the many minerals that are found there and the white fox represents the fur-bearing animals.

THE MOUNTAIN AVENS

The Mountain Avens grows everywhere in the eastern and central Arctic.

This member of the rose family is found in open and well-drained areas and can also grow on rocky ground. The plant has trailing branches and white flowers with yellow centres.

The Mountain Avens blooms in June and July.
