MANITOBA

A Cree word meaning "a place of the Great Spirit"

Manitoba is one of three prairie provinces. Saskatchewan is to the west and Ontario is to the east.

The northern part of the province is covered with forests, lakes and rivers. It is the home for many different kinds of animals including the moose, deer, elk, black bear, beaver, muskrat, lynx and wolf. Churchill is called the "polar bear capital of the world" because a large number of bears make their dens south of the town.

Manitoba has three large lakes - Lake Winnipeg, Lake Winnipegosis and Lake Manitoba. Lake Winnipeg is the largest.

More than half of the lowlands of southern Manitoba are covered by water ( lakes, rivers, ponds and marshes ).

Winnipeg is the capital city. The city is home to more than half of Manitoba's population.
