HOW THE BEAR LOST HIS TAIL

CHARACTERS (5) – NARRATORS (3), BEAR , FOX

NARRATOR 1 – Long ago the bear a long beautiful tail. This is the story of how he lost it.

NARRATOR 2 – It was a very cold day. Snow was all around. A bear was out in the snow.

NARRATOR 3 – He wanted to find something to eat before he began his long sleep. He met Red Fox. The fox had some fish.

BEAR – Good day Mr. Fox. Where did you get the fine fish?

FOX – I got the fish from the river.

BEAR – They are beautiful fish. Can you tell me how to get some.

FOX – I will be happy to help you Mr. Bear. I will show you how to get some fish.

NARRATOR 1 – The fox and bear went over the cold snow to the river.

FOX – First you must go out on the ice and make a hole. Then you must stick your tail through the hole and down into the water.

NARRATOR 2 – The bear did just what the bad fox told him to. He made a hole in the ice and sat down near it with his tail in the water.

FOX – You must stay there a long time. The longer you stay, the more fish you will catch.

NARRATOR 3 – The bear sat on the ice for a long time.

BEAR – Brrrrr! It is getting very cold. But I will not get up and go. I want to get many fish.

NARRATOR 1 – After a time the sun began to go down.

BEAR – I must have many fish by now. I will get up and see how many I have.

NARRATOR 2 – But the bear could not get up. He could not get his tail out of the hole.

NARRATOR 3 – His tail was stuck in the ice. He tried to jump to get his tail out. He made a big jump. Off came his long beautiful tail.

ALL – And that is why the bear has a little tail.
