Saskatoon, Saskatchewan
print shop

In small communities, a newspaper might be printed once a week. Some of the articles in the local paper came from city newspapers. The telegraph was also a source of news. The shop also printed advertisements and notices.

Money to publish a paper came from the people who wanted advertisements or notices, from subscriptions and from the sale of the newspaper.

Some of the items found in the shop included a printing press, typesetting machine or handset type and wooden type cases, printing paper and supplies needed for making ink.

Note: In 1878, The Saskatchewan Herald, the Territories' first newspaper (at Battleford) , began its publication. It was founded by Patrick G. Laurie. It took 72 days for his printing press to be delivered by ox-cart from Fort Garry (Manitoba).

The Regina-Leader was established in 1883. The first issue was on March 1, 1883.
