LOGGING
  • Logging companies use heavy machinery to move and stack the logs.
  • Huge trucks are used to haul the heavy logs.
  • Logging roads are needed to haul the logs from the camp to the saw or paper mills.

THE SAWMILL

  • Trucks haul the logs to the sawmills.
  • Logs are stacked in the yard.
  • Logs are cut and the bark is stripped off in the mill.
  • Saws trim the boards to different sizes.
  • Boards are sorted by size, stacked and allowed to dry in bins.
  • The stacks of lumber are dried in kilns.
  • Every piece of lumber is inspected and graded.
  • Lumber is stacked according to length, width and grade.
  • The bundles are strapped together and wrapped in weather-proof covering.
  • Bundles are moved to the yard, then shipped by truck or rail.
  • Wood chips are collected for pulp and paper manufacturing.

PULP AND PAPER MILL

  • Bark is removed from logs. Then logs are chipped for processing. (Wood chips also come from sawmills.)
  • The wood chips are steamed and cooked to separate the wood fibres.
  • Chemicals are used to bleach the brown fibre into white pulp fibre.
  • Bleached pulp (softwood and hardwood) is sold to papermakers in Canada, United States, the Pacific Rim and Europe.
    • Softwoods - Jack Pine, White and Black Spruce
    • Hardwoods - Aspen (White Poplar).
  • The Paper Machine produces paper in sheets or rolls. The paper is used for photocopiers, writing, computers, books and other print material.
