playing checkers in the store
For some settlers going to the store meant a day-long trip. The store offered a warm place to sit and relax for awhile after hours of travelling.

Customers could sit around a stove and discuss the news or read a newspaper. People could enjoy a cup of tea or coffee.

Some people played a game of checkers while the storekeeper packed their grocery order. In the evenings men from the community met for a game of cards.
