Ontario is Canada's second largest province. Ontario means "beautiful lake" in Iroquois. Northern Ontario is covered with forests. The area is rich in precious metals such as gold and silver. Nickel, copper, zinc, iron ore and magnesium are also mined. It is a rugged wilderness of rock, trees, lakes, ponds, and swamps.

Southern Ontario is bordered by four of the five Great Lakes. They are Lake Superior, Lake Huron, Lake Erie, and Lake Ontario. Ninety percent of the people live in the southern part of the province. Toronto, the capital city of Ontario, is Canada's largest city.

The Great Lakes region and St. Lawrence Lowland has good soil for farming. Farmers grow peaches, apples, grapes, pears, strawberries, cherries, raspberries and plums. There are also dairy farms and farms where vegetables are grown.
