PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND

The Gentle Island

MAP

Canada's smallest province is covered with many small lakes and rivers. It is 224 km. long. It is one of the four Atlantic provinces of Canada. Charlottetown, the capital city, is the largest city on the island. A bridge called the Confederation Bridge joins New Brunswick and P.E.I. The bridge was opened in 1997 and is almost 13 km long.

There is a large fishing industry. Lobsters are caught in traps. Clams, scallops, mussels and oysters are farmed in underwater hatcheries.

Rich soil and mild climate make it a very good place for farming. That is why it is nicknamed "the Garden Province".

The main industry is tourism. People come from around the world to visit Green Gables House which is a museum about Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of the Anne of Green Gables books. Other attractions on the island are the red soil, sand dunes and 800 km. of sandy beaches.
